With 40 million Americans suffering from chronic sleep disorders and another 30 million with occasional sleep problems, it's no wonder that sleeping pills are such a big business. Well, mounting evidence indicates that some of these nocturnal disorders may be self-inflicted.
Recent studies have shown that light, especially blue light, reduces the melatonin in our brains. Melatonin is a naturally occurring compound that helps regulate our circadian rhythm by being released into the brain to make us sleepy around 9 or 10 pm. For millenniums, humans went to bed when it got dark and rose at sunrise. But all that changed about 100 years ago with the invention of the light bulb. Now, many of us sit in lighted rooms until late at night either watching TV or working on our computer. That has the effect of suppressing the melatonin and pushing back the circadian rhythm, resulting in people who can't get to sleep at bedtime and struggle to get up when the alarm goes off.
So, if you're having problems sleeping, take the advice of doctors. Turn down the lights and turn off the TV's and computers. Then, if you go to bed when golden slumbers fill your eyes, you'll find that smiles will awake you when you rise.
