Phone home, SETI@Home
In a new documentary on the Discovery Channel, theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking says he believes intelligent life exists in the universe. He also says he thinks it would be "too risky" to contact them because he feels any extraterrestrials capable of space travel are likely to be made up of "nomads" looking to "conquer and colonize." Well, it might be too late. In 1960, Dr. Frank Drake set up a SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) experiment by using a radio telescope to scan the stars Tau Ceti and Epsilon Eridani. Today, Dr. Drake and the SETI Institute are involving thousands of people in their search for extraterrestrials with the program SETI@Home.

Anyone with an internet connection can download the SETI@Home software that is used to analyze radio signals for signs of life in outer space. When the program runs on your computer, it joins with other online computers and becomes a very large super computer. With this large computational ability, scientists can narrow down the areas of space they believe are the most promising to find life.

And should SETI find life in outer space, the aliens might decide to come here to "conquer and colonize," but the really smart ones will probably say, "Don't call us, we’ll call you."
