As holder of 1093 patents, Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931) is considered one of the most prolific inventors in history.
His development and sale of the quadruplex telegraph to Western Union in 1874 is what gave Edison the chance to be really innovative. Western Union’s offer of $10,000 dollars was more than twice the amount he had planned on asking for the device. Edison took their offer and used the money to build the first industrial research lab focusing on technological innovation through research and development. It employed workers, scientists and engineers at the Menlo Park (Edison), New Jersey location and included Lewis Latimer, Frank J. Sprague and Nikola Tesla.
From this lab came a host of advanced technologies, including the phonograph, electric railway, electrical power distribution, the stock ticker, Kinetograph (motion picture camera) and, of course, the first commercially practical light bulb
Thomas Edison’s genius was probably more aspiration than inspiration and more innovation than invention. But mostly, much of his genius could be attributed to the perspiration of the many under-recognized great minds he employed.
