The Sunderbans is a large area of forest located on the border of India and Bangladesh and is known for its large population of tigers. These large cats, often weighing up to 700 lbs., are not natural enemies of man, but have been known to attack people wandering this vast wooded area.

Realizing the ambush always came from behind and mostly on individuals that had been separated from a group, a unique and successful solution was introduced in 1983 to prevent tiger attacks. Upon entering the woodlands the hunters, farmers and fishermen would wear masks on the back of their heads to make it appear they were looking in both directions. Since the tigers could not figure out how to sneak up on their human prey, the number of attacks dropped dramatically. So, by watching their backs, the locals were able to stop unpleasant surprises from sneaking up on them!
