Baseball

Larry MacPhailIn 1933, Larry MacPhail was elected general manager of the Cincinnati Reds. The franchise was suffering from low attendance, poor finances and, worst of all, a losing record. Through his force of personality, he got the National League to allow each of its eight teams to play a series of night games in 1935, something that had never been done before. The only team to accept the offer was MacPhail’s Reds.

On May 24, 1935, under the lights for the first time, the Reds defeated the 1940 World Series Champs lineupPhiladelphia Phillies by a score of 2 -1. Most importantly, the night games drew almost four times as many fans as the daylight games. Although \MacPhail left for the position of President of the Brooklyn Dodgers after the 1937 season, the increased revenue from night games over the next few years allowed the Cincinnati Reds to build a team that had everyone coming. And the fans had reason to come; the Reds won the1939 and 1940 National League Pennant and in 1940 they beat the Detroit Tigers to win the World Series.
