When the Space Shuttle Atlantis blasts off of launch pad 39A later this month, its main mission will be to give the Hubble Space Telescope, launched in 1990, its final service call.
The Hubble was named after Edwin Powell Hubble (1889-1953) who first proved that galaxies existed outside of our own Milky Way. The discovery was not in the scientific mainstream when announced in 1925, but quickly changed our view of the universe. Four years later, when Hubble discovered that these distant galaxies were moving away from each other, he came up with the first observational evidence of the Big Bang Theory of the Universe and confirmed one of the basic tenets of Albert Einstein's General Theory of Relativity.
The Hubble Space Telescope's ability to look back 13 billion light years has given us a vision that Dr. Hubble could not have imagined; a view to the edges of space and a front row seat to the universe unfolding as it should.
