Invisibility Cloaks might be possible within ten years

Cloaking devices, as seen in the Harry Potter and Star Trek movies, may be closer to reality than one may think. Scientists expect that within the next ten years they will be able to make visible objects disappear.

Researchers have developed metamaterials or materials which gain their properties from their structure rather than their composition. Some of these macroscopic composites have been engineered to bend electromagnetic energy, such as light, radar, and microwaves, away from the viewer, rendering what's behind them "invisible."

Beyond military applications, some of the practical uses include better mobile communications by cloaking buildings and towers that block reception. Covering these structures with metamaterials would make them invisible to the longer wavelengths of communication devices. Invisible fiber optics could be made for 3D Television is within sight!medical and security devices and, best of all, they could also be used to make three dimensional television screens.

Invisibility has long been the realm of fantasy and science fiction, but now science has begun its first steps toward reaching its goals of turning the visible into the invisible.
