The speech was written and re-written on stationery, not the back of an envelope. It was finished in a guest house the night before it was to be delivered, not on a train as so many of us were taught in grade school.
The next day his speech was preceded by music, prayer, and a two-hour oration by Edward Everett, an accomplished politician and highly regarded speaker.
What followed was a short ten-line, 272-word, two-minute speech that defined our nation in its darkest hour. Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address was delivered on November 19, 1863 and not only dedicated a national cemetery, but its final line, "...government of the people, by the people, and for the people..." symbolizes the definition of democracy itself.
145 years later, our nation went to the polls and cast more than 130 million votes, not on the proposition that all men are created equal, but on the belief it is true. And in the end the process was messy and maybe the worst way to pick the leader of a country... except all the others that have been tried.
