The speech was written and re-written on stationery, not the back of an envelope. It was finished in a guest house the night before it was to be delivered, not on a train as so many of us were taught in grade school.
 
The next day his speech was preceded by music, prayer, and a two-hour oration by Edward Everett, an accomplished politician and highly regarded speaker.
 
What followed was a short ten-line, 272-word, two-minute speech that defined our nation in its darkest hour. Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address was delivered on November 19, 1863 and not only dedicated a national cemetery, but its final line, "...government of the people, by the people, and for the people..." symbolizes the definition of democracy itself.
