In 1905, Albert Einstein (1879 -1955) wrote a paper on the Photoelectric Effect, or Sunthe process of turning visible light into electricity. Until then, scientists thought that all electromagnetic radiation was in the form of wave energy. Einstein theorized that light sometimes acted as waves and other times like particles. He argued that these particles, now known as photons, were responsible for the release of electrons when light hit certain metal surfaces thus creating electricity.

How important was this theory? To us, the practical effects can now be seen inPhoto Electric Effect everything from the image sensors on digital cameras, to solar panels and night vision goggles. To Einstein, this was the paper that, in 1921, won him his only Noble Prize for Physics.

Albert Einstein's theory of the Photoelectric Effect was just one of his four groundbreaking papers published in 1905 that helped explain our universe, expand our knowledge, and ushered in a previously unmatched century of scientific discoveries.
