Definition

The writings of English author Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) include poetry, essays, novels, biographies, and literary criticism. But perhaps his most impressive Samuel Johnsoncontribution was his work on the Dictionary of the English Language.

In 1745, Johnson was asked by an English consortium of printers to create the first dictionary to set a pattern of grammar, definition and spelling. Published in 1755, Dictionary took nineyears to write, included 42,773 entries, and its pages were almost 18 inches tall and 20 inches wide. It was not the first dictionary ever written, nor the most complete. However, his collection of words, Samuel Johnson's Dictionaryrules of stile (style), and illustrations of meaning set the standard for dictionaries that are still used today.

In his book, Samuel Johnson’s Dictionary, Jack Lynch wrote, "what Johnson's dictionary offers are insights into the 18th century and a faithful record of the language people used. Johnson's Dictionary is more than a reference book; it serves as a work of literature unto itself."

Initially, Samuel Johnson’s only intent may have been to create a dictionary. But with his method of defining words, he planted the signpost showing us the way to express our ideas to this day.
