Influenced by rockabilly and rhythm and blues, the term “Surfing Sound” was first used by musician Dick Dale, the man considered most responsible for the surf music of the early 1960’s. According to Dale, he “attempted to musically reproduce the feeling he had while surfing.” He described the feeling as “vibration and pulsification with a heavy staccato sound on the low-key strings of his guitar accompanied by a heavy thunder-like beat.”
Dale’s “signature” sound can be found in his songs “Let’s Go Trippin’ ” and “Surf Beat” (1961). His influence on American music can be heard in many of the familiar sounds of The Beach Boys, The Ventures, and The Surfaris. His diverse movie credits range from “Muscle Beach Party” (1964) to “Pulp Fiction” (1994).
Dick Dale’s wave of musical influence is one that musicians are still riding today.
