In 1937, Ruth Wakefield (1903 -1977), owner of the Toll House Inn located in Whitman, Massachusetts, was preparing a batch of cookies for her guests. She decided try to improve upon her standard recipe by adding small pieces of semisweet chocolate to the dough mix. Instead of the chocolate morsels melting as she expected, they held their shape and became soft and creamy. The Chocolate Chip Cookie became very popular at the inn and when Ms. Wakefield published the recipe in a Boston Newspaper, the regional sales of Nestle’s Semi-Sweet Chocolate rose dramatically.
Ruth Wakefield eventually agreed to let Nestle print the recipe on every wrapper of its semisweet chocolate bar to the delight of the "Cookie Monster" in us all.
