The inauguration of the President of the United States comes after months of primaries, an intense general election, picking a cabinet, and finally the Oath of Office.

However, it is the Twentieth Amendment of the US Constitution that defines the beginning and end of a president’s term, not the swearing in ceremony as most believe. Ratified on January 23, 1933, it states that "The terms of the President and Vice President shall end at noon on the 20th day of January...."
