It's almost lunch time, let's get a sub!The Submarine Sandwich (also known as a hoagie, hero, zep, torpedo and grinder, to name a few) originally came from different Italian-American communities in New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New York and Massachusetts.

Several theories place the sub's origins in the navy yards of Massachusetts and Groton, Connecticut at the beginning of World War I where the sandwiches were eaten by the workers. Another theory is that Italian immigrant Dominic Conti (1874-1954) started a grocery store in Paterson, NJ and named the sandwich after seeing Call today, not tomattaa recovered submarine from 1901 at a local museum.

The sub sandwich first spread to pizzerias and small restaurants, then later to large chains such as Subway, Quiznos and Mr. Sub. And although the President of the United States could get a sub sandwich almost anywhere in the world, he decided to spend his $4.41 on half of a number 5 from Tastee Sub Shop and got a taste of New Jersey.

We hope you enjoyed it Mr. President.
