Summer's here and if you're one of the 54 million Americans who mow their lawn, you may be surprised at the environmental cost of that weekend activity.

According to recent studies, one hour of lawn mowing spews out as much air pollution as a 100-mile road trip in an average mid-size car. Our noisy, gas-powered lawn mower is estimated to be responsible for more than 5% of all air pollution. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), that's not our only problem. Our mowing uses 800 million gallons of gas with about 17 million gallons of that fuel being spilled every year while refueling lawn equipment. That's more than the spill by the Exxon Valdez in Prince William Sound in 1989. The fuel spills lead to ground water contamination and increase the volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) released into the air.

However, there are some alternatives to the gas-powered mower. Electric mowers eliminate all of the local pollution and create only a negligible amount at the power plant. A zero carbon footprint can be attained by using a low-tech reel mower (pictured at the top of the page) or something like a high-tech solar Husqvarna (video).

With grass being cheap to install, Americans will continue to care for their lawns.
